Lord’s Prayer Petition Review

Our Father, who art in heaven.

This is the introduction:

  • God wants us to think of Him as our Father and we are his children
  • God wants us to come to Him in prayer

Hallowed Be Thy Name.

This is the First Petition:

  • God’s Name is holy and we need to keep it that way
  • Use it in a respectful way, do not take it in vain

Thy kingdom come.

This is the Second Petition:

  • We are praying that the kingdom will come to us
  • We learned about Abram’s visions from God that told Abram he would have as many descendants as the stars

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

This is the Third Petition:

  • We are praying that the will of God is done among us and that we accept it
  • We learned that some of Jesus’ disciples were thrown into jail for talking about Jesus, but this was part of God’s plan

Give us this day our daily bread.

This is the Fourth Petition:

  • This is prayer for everything that we need (food, water, clothing, children, etc), and also that we give thanks to God for all that he has given to us
  • We learned about Moses and the Israelites needing food, so God sent bread (manna) for them to eat

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

This is the Fifth Petition:

  • We pray for forgiveness from God for our sins, and we also pray for for help to forgive others for their sins
  • We learned about the thief that hung next to Jesus on the cross. He asked for forgiveness and Jesus said that he would see the thief in Paradise!

And lead us not into temptation.

This is the Sixth Petition:

  • We are praying for God to help us to resist temptation and guard us against Satan
  • Even Jesus was tempted by Satan, but Jesus used God’s Word to resist the temptation

 But deliver us from evil.

This is the Seventh Petition:

  • We are praying for God to keep us safe, but to also be with us when are having trouble
  • Remember Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego, God hears our prayers and protects our souls

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

This is The Conclusion:

  • We cannot answer our own prayers, only God can
  • Amen is not just a word to end a prayer. We are using it to acknowledge that we trust in God’s ability to answer our prayer, even if that answer is not always what we wanted
